The family of a 20-year-old University of Kansas student who was killed in a hit-and-run Thursday evening is urging the public to come forward with information that could help identify the driver responsible.

Elsa McGrain, of Omaha, Nebraska, was struck and killed while jogging on North Seventh Street near Interstate 70 in North Lawrence at around 6 p.m., according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. McGrain, who was studying pre-medicine, was set to graduate from KU in 2026. Her family said she was dedicated, hardworking, and passionate about helping others.
Authorities said her body was discovered at 3:35 a.m. Friday by a passerby who called 911. Investigators believe McGrain was hit by a white or light-colored pickup truck. The Sheriff’s Office released a grainy surveillance photo of the suspected vehicle and is asking anyone who may have been in the area between 5:45 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Thursday to come forward.

As the search for answers continues, McGrain’s family is enduring a devastating loss. Her great-aunt, Nancy Chartrand, shared a public plea on social media in hopes of generating leads that could help investigators.
“PLEASE, PLEASE SHARE,” Chartrand wrote. “Many of you have seen a news story in the last 24 hours about a KU student who was killed in a hit-and-run accident while out jogging Thursday. I am absolutely heartbroken to share that she was my great niece, Elsa McGrain. Her parents have asked that I share her photo along with information on the accident in hopes that it will help with leads. Prayers for our family are deeply appreciated.”
The McGrain family described Elsa as vibrant, compassionate, and full of promise. They say they are focused not only on finding the driver responsible but also on honoring the life of a young woman whose future was taken too soon.
Investigators continue to review nearby surveillance footage, speak with potential witnesses, and analyze evidence collected at the scene. Authorities emphasize that even the smallest detail could help solve the case.
