Police and emergency crews are responding to a shooting that occurred Friday afternoon near several Lexington school campuses, prompting heightened safety measures across the area.
According to the Lexington Police Department, officers were dispatched just before 3:00 p.m. to the 1100 block of Centre Parkway for a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries described as life-threatening.
Authorities confirmed that the shooting did not take place on school property. However, due to the proximity to Fayette County Public Schools’ Tates Creek campus — which includes Tates Creek Elementary, Middle, and High School — district officials implemented security precautions.
A spokesperson for the school district said the entire Tates Creek campus was placed on “Heightened Alert” while police secured the surrounding area. High school buses were able to depart as scheduled, but students who walk were held temporarily for safety. Tates Creek Elementary had already dismissed for the day, and its afterschool program remained sheltered in place. The middle school also remained on heightened alert while the investigation continued.
Police advised that drivers may experience delays, road closures, or traffic detours near Centre Parkway as officers process the scene and gather evidence.
