The College of Charleston community is grieving the loss of freshman student Owen Kenney, 19, whose death has been confirmed by Charleston police after a weeklong search. Authorities announced Thursday that Kenney died by suicide after being last seen on the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge early on the morning of October 31.

Kenney, originally from Tinton Falls, New Jersey, was reported missing after friends saw him walking alone near campus following a Halloween gathering. Surveillance and phone data later placed him on the pedestrian walkway of the 2.5-mile-long bridge that spans the Cooper River, roughly five miles from the college.
Search Efforts Spanned Land, Water, and Air
In the days following his disappearance, an extensive search mobilized local law enforcement, underwater recovery specialists, K-9 units, aerial support, and dozens of volunteers. The effort has now shifted from rescue to recovery as crews continue to search the waters beneath the bridge.
Charleston police acknowledged the outpouring of community concern but urged the public to avoid spreading rumors or speculation online.
“While we recognize the tremendous public interest and concern surrounding this case, it is important to remember that at the heart of this investigation is a family searching for their loved one,” the department said. “Misinformation can hinder progress by diverting attention and resources away from verifiable leads.”
A Beloved Friend, Son, and Student
Kenney was a 2024 graduate of Red Bank Catholic High School, where friends and teachers described him as kind, thoughtful, and deeply loved. He had begun his freshman year at the College of Charleston just months ago, forming new friendships and building the foundation for his academic path.
His parents, Tanya and Tillman Kenney, traveled to South Carolina shortly after the search began and worked closely with authorities and volunteers throughout.
Support has poured in from both New Jersey and Charleston as former classmates, teammates, and university peers share memories and condolences.

University Response
The College of Charleston issued a statement expressing sorrow and offering mental health resources to students:
“The loss of a member of our Cougar family is heartbreaking. We extend our deepest condolences to Owen’s family, loved ones, and all who knew him. We encourage members of our community to seek support during this difficult time.”
Counseling services are available through the university’s Counseling Center, and additional crisis resources have been provided to students and staff.
