4 people shot on Church Street in New Haven

A woman is in critical condition after a quadruple shooting early Friday morning on Church Street in New Haven, according to police. Three men suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting.

Officers were dispatched to the 50 block of Church Street just after 2 a.m. for the report of gunshots and someone shot.

New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson said approximately 30 rounds were exchanged between two shooters as area bars were closing. One of the shooters used a high-capacity firearm, the police chief said.

Some officers were alerted to a person shot on Church Street by Center Street. There, they found a 19-year-old woman from West Haven unresponsive with a gunshot wound. She was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital and remains in critical condition as of Friday afternoon, according to Jacobson.
Officers found a 22-year-old man and a 21-year-old man from Hamden with gunshot wounds. A fourth person, a 19-year-old man from New Haven, arrived at Yale-New Haven Hospital by private vehicle later. Jacobson said two of the men have since been released from the hospital.

Detectives determined the majority of the incident occurred on Church Street by Center Street, but two of the people shot had fled the area following the gunfire. Police said they recovered a firearm and ballistic evidence from the scene.

One person was arrested Jacobson said and they are working on a warrant for a second suspect. One was on parole, and the other had been arrested but had not been adjudicated yet.

“This investigation is working very quickly,” Jacobson said. “We’ve already made an onsite arrest. Both of those individuals had weapons charges in the past.”

The police chief said 12 officers were stationed near Crown and Temple streets when the shooting happened. More officers will be in the area of Chuch and Chapel until further notice.

“Are people safe coming here to New Haven at night? Yeah,” New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker said. “I think it’s very, very clear that New Haven is overwhelmingly a safe place.”
