Former Decatur police officer continuing to claim self-defense in deadly shooting

DECATUR, Ala. (WAFF) – A former Decatur Police officer’s legal team continues to dispute a murder charge by claiming self-defense regarding a deadly shooting.

Mac Marquette’s legal team has filed a response to the State of Alabama, continuing to claim that he acted in self-defense during the shooting of Decatur homeowner, Steve Perkins.

SUPPORT THE FAMILY, GOD BLESS YOU

Marquette’s legal team claims in its new filing with the State Supreme Court that the judge over the case and the Court of Criminal Appeals did not fairly apply Alabama law regarding self-defense by law enforcement when considering his claim.

The state argues that the officer’s presence during this truck repossession was unusual and that the situation will be best resolved in front of a jury.

Marquette’s murder trial has been pushed multiple times, but is currently set for January 2026.
