Law enforcement agencies are responding to an active shooter situation at the University of Virginia (UVA) on Monday afternoon, prompting an emergency lockdown across the campus.

According to the UVA Emergency Alert System, a message was sent to all students, faculty, and staff urging them to “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT” as police respond to reports of an armed individual near the Shannon Library area.
“Active shooter reported near Shannon Library. Shelter in place immediately,” the alert read. “Run if you can, hide if you must, fight if necessary. Law enforcement is on scene.”
Heavy police presence has been reported throughout the area, with Charlottesville Police, University Police, and Virginia State Police working together to secure the campus and locate the suspect. Students and staff have been instructed to remain indoors, lock doors, silence phones, and stay away from windows until an all-clear is issued.
Witnesses on campus described hearing multiple gunshots and seeing students running for safety toward nearby academic buildings. Authorities have not yet confirmed if there are any victims or injuries.
Emergency responders have set up a perimeter around the library and surrounding buildings as tactical units sweep the area.
This is a developing situation. Students, staff, and community members are urged to avoid the area and follow instructions from local law enforcement.
Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.
