It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that the Sunshine Coast community mourns the tragic loss of Finley Bone, a vibrant and much-loved 21-year-old footballer, who died after being struck by lightning during a freak weather event at the Cooroy Sporting Complex on Thursday afternoon.
Finley Bone, After Freak Lightning Strike at Cooroy
Finley was practicing goal-kicking with her partner when the bolt struck suddenly, despite no rain falling at the time. Critical care paramedics rushed to the scene and transported her to Nambour Hospital in critical condition, but despite their best efforts, Finley could not be saved.
Her devastated mother, Donna Markert, described her daughter as a “beautiful, kind, and caring young woman” whose life was taken far too soon. “No one can believe this happened. Finley was 21 and had her life taken away in a minute,” she said tearfully.
A passionate athlete, Finley played for the Noosa Lions FQPL3 Women’s team and also dedicated her time to coaching the Under-12/13 girls squad. Her family says she lived and breathed football, and that brings them a small measure of comfort — knowing she was doing what she loved, with someone she loved, in her final moments.
“Fin was a sports tragic,” her mother shared. “We are taking solace knowing she was doing something she loved. It’s just tragic.”
The Noosa Lions Football Club released a heartfelt tribute, expressing devastation over the loss of one of their own:
“Finley was a much-loved member of our Women’s team and a coach of our junior girls. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Paul, Donna, and all of Finley’s family and friends.” 💙
Football Queensland also extended condolences, confirming all football activities at the club are suspended while the community grieves.
As tributes pour in from teammates, friends, and loved ones, Finley is remembered not only for her athletic talent but for her warmth, generosity, and bright spirit that inspired everyone around her.
May her memory live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
