Troopers said the crash happened just before 8 p.m. on North 56th Street near Society Park Boulevard. A Chevy Silverado driven by a man from Hialeah was traveling southbound when three children — an 11-year-old girl, an 8-year-old boy, and Jalaysia — ran across the road.

All three children were hit by the truck. Emergency responders rushed them to a nearby hospital, where Jalaysia later died from her injuries. The 11-year-old and 8-year-old sustained non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to recover.

Authorities said the driver remained at the scene and has been cooperating with investigators. No charges have been filed at this time, and the crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.

The Tampa community is mourning the loss of young Jalaysia Capers, whose bright spirit and innocent life were taken far too soon. Neighbors and local families have expressed their condolences and are urging drivers to be extra cautious in residential areas where children play and cross frequently.
