The city of Edmonton is mourning the loss of one of its most familiar and respected voices. John Sexsmith, a longtime journalist and beloved sportscaster at Global Edmonton, has passed away after a courageous 13-year battle with cancer. He was 60 years old.

For more than two decades, John was a trusted face in Edmonton homes, bringing passion, humor, and heartfelt storytelling to local sports coverage. A proud graduate of NAIT’s Radio and Television Arts program, John’s broadcasting journey began in the early 1980s. He joined ITV (now Global Edmonton) and quickly made his mark through his deep knowledge of sports, tireless work ethic, and infectious personality.
John was rarely seen without a smile on his face or a classic “dad joke” at the ready. He brought warmth to every story he told, whether covering a local minor hockey game or reporting from the sidelines of major sporting events. He didn’t just report on sports — he connected communities through them.
His battle with cancer, which began in 2010, was one marked by immense strength, grace, and perseverance. Never one to be defined by illness, John became a powerful advocate for cancer research and awareness, working closely with the Alberta Cancer Foundation to raise support and inspire hope. Even as he underwent treatments, John remained active, continuing to report, coach minor hockey, and uplift others around him with his optimism and resilience.
John’s commitment extended beyond the newsroom. He was a dedicated coach and mentor to countless young athletes in Edmonton. His time on the bench was more than just about wins and losses — it was about building confidence, character, and community.
He leaves behind his beloved wife Joanne, and son Joel, whom he adored and spoke of often with pride and love. He also leaves behind a wide circle of friends, colleagues, and fans who admired not only his professional accomplishments but the remarkable person he was.
