This afternoon, we were met with heartbreaking news that has shaken the heart of Estill Springs and beyond. Former Fire Chief David Pendergraff has passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a legacy that will live on in the hearts of everyone who had the honor of knowing him. His sudden departure has left a void in the community, the fire service family, and most profoundly, in the lives of his loved ones.
Chief Pendergraff was more than a firefighter—he was a beacon of service, leadership, and unwavering dedication. Since becoming Fire Chief in 2013, he led the Estill Springs Fire Department with courage, compassion, and integrity. Under his guidance, the department grew stronger, more unified, and deeply connected to the community it serves. His leadership was not just in title, but in every call he answered, every firefighter he mentored, and every citizen he protected.
He was known not just for his skill and professionalism, but for his heart. Chief Pendergraff cared deeply about those around him—his crew, his community, and his family. He lived a life of purpose, marked by selfless service and genuine kindness. To many, he was a mentor; to others, a friend; and to all, an inspiration.
Today, as we mourn the loss of Chief Pendergraff, we also honor the life he lived and the difference he made. He represented the very best of us—brave, compassionate, and steadfast. His legacy will endure in the lives he touched, in the firefighters he trained, and in the community he so faithfully served.
To his family, we extend our deepest condolences. May you find strength in knowing how loved and respected he was. To the men and women of the Estill Springs Fire Department, our hearts are with you as you grieve the loss of your brother, your leader, and your friend. You do not stand alone.
