A tragic shooting at a Taco Bell restaurant in Indian Trail left one employee dead on Monday evening, prompting a large-scale law enforcement response and an ongoing homicide investigation by the Union County Sheriff’s Office (UCSO).
Authorities say the incident occurred at approximately 8:49 p.m., when deputies were dispatched to the Taco Bell following multiple reports of gunfire. Deputies arrived within minutes and confirmed that a shooting had taken place inside the restaurant.
According to the UCSO, one employee of the restaurant was found suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite efforts by first responders to render aid, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Their identity has not yet been released pending notification of family members.
Investigation Ongoing
The suspect reportedly fled the area immediately after the shooting, and investigators are working to identify both the suspect and the vehicle involved. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage, interviewing witnesses, and collecting physical evidence from the scene.
“The investigation is still in its early stages,” a UCSO spokesperson said. “Our detectives are actively pursuing all leads to determine what led to this senseless act of violence.”
Authorities emphasized that, at this time, there is no indication of any ongoing danger to the public. The restaurant and surrounding area have been secured, and the Taco Bell will remain closed until the investigation is complete.

One local resident described the scene as “chaotic,” with police cars and crime scene tape surrounding the restaurant late into the night. “It’s heartbreaking,” another community member said. “You never expect something like this to happen so close to home.”
