TERRE HAUTE, IN — A tragic incident unfolded Thursday afternoon outside a Kroger grocery store on the city’s south side, leaving one woman dead and a man critically injured in what authorities believe was a domestic-related shooting.

According to the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred just after 12:30 p.m. in front of the Kroger located along South U.S. Highway 41. Deputies say a woman was driving a vehicle with a man and a child as passengers when, for reasons still under investigation, the man allegedly shot the woman while inside the moving vehicle.

The vehicle then crashed into the front of the store, drawing immediate response from law enforcement and emergency personnel.

The woman, who has not yet been publicly identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was found critically injured and was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment. His current condition has not been disclosed.

Officials confirmed that the two adults knew each other, though the nature of their relationship has not been clarified. The child who was in the vehicle was unharmed, authorities said.

The shooting and crash are now the focus of an active investigation. Detectives remained on scene for several hours collecting evidence and speaking with witnesses. Shoppers and staff were temporarily evacuated or sheltered in place as a precaution.

Authorities have not released the identities of those involved as they work to notify family members and determine a motive for the violence.

Anyone with information related to the incident is urged to contact the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more details become available.
