Authorities have identified the registered owner of the Jeep that plunged into the Niagara River on Monday morning as Jason Beckman, 52, of North Tonawanda, New York.

According to the New York State Police, Beckman was tragically pronounced deceased following the incident. Beckman was a well-known figure in the Amherst community, serving as a varsity football coach and boys’ varsity bowling coach at Amherst Central Schools.
The school district issued a heartfelt statement expressing deep sorrow over his passing, describing Beckman as a valued member of their school family. “We are deeply saddened by this loss,” the district said.
“Our thoughts are with his family, friends, students, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.” The district also noted that mental health and counseling services would be available to students, staff, and families in need of support as they cope with the unexpected tragedy.
The chain of events began around 9:15 a.m. Monday, when authorities received reports of a vehicle driving off the Niagara Scenic Parkway near the Bird Overlook and entering the Niagara River. Witnesses described seeing a truck leave the roadway and head into the water.
Emergency crews, including officers from New York State Park Police, New York State Police, the Niagara Falls Police Department, and the Niagara Falls Fire Department, quickly responded to the scene.
A large-scale search effort was launched, involving both air and water resources. Helicopters circled overhead while rescue boats scoured the river for any sign of the vehicle or its occupant.
Approximately an hour and a half later, divers located a submerged Jeep about 50 feet offshore. By early Monday evening, authorities confirmed that they had located a body believed to be connected to the incident.
Later that night, police confirmed the identity of the deceased as Jason Beckman. Officials stated that no other individuals were believed to be involved or missing in connection with the crash, and the search operations were officially concluded.
Beckman’s body was transported to the Erie County Medical Center, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause of death. At this time, the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
