Chayse Ott Watervliet, MI Car Accident: Chayse Ott died after M-140 Accident Caused by Speed

The Watervliet community is grieving the loss of 17-year-old Chayse Ott, a beloved senior at Watervliet High School, who passed away following a tragic car accident on Sunday, September 28, 2025.

Shortly before 3 p.m. that day, the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a serious crash on Dwight Boyer Road near M-140 in Watervliet Township. Deputies stated that speed was considered a contributing factor in the accident.

When first responders arrived, they found the driver trapped and unconscious inside the vehicle. Crews worked to extract Chayse, who was transported in critical condition to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. His family remained at the hospital’s Trauma ICU, keeping close as he fought for his life.

Three other individuals involved in the crash sustained only minor injuries and were treated at the scene. The Sheriff’s Accident Investigation Unit continues to investigate the incident.

Chayse was not only a dedicated student but also a cherished teammate on the Watervliet football team. Friends and classmates describe him as an amazing son, brother, and friend whose impact on those around him will never be forgotten.

In a heartfelt statement, Watervliet Youth Football & Cheer expressed their grief:

“The Watervliet Youth Football and Cheer program is deeply saddened by the passing of Chayse Ott. Our thoughts and prayers are with Chayse’s family and friends.”

The group also invited the community to come together in remembrance:

“Please join us at the Varsity Game tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 3, at 7:00 PM for the home game vs. South Haven to show support for his friends and all who loved him. Your presence means a lot during this difficult time.”


As Watervliet mourns the loss of a bright young life, the outpouring of support from classmates, teammates, and neighbors highlights how deeply Chayse touched those around him.
