Joel Hodder Halifax Obituary – Joel Hodder Cause of Death – Joel Hodder, Marine Service Technician Apprentice at Shining Waters Marina, Dies in Accident

It is with deep sorrow and heartbreak that we share the sudden passing of our beloved son and brother, Joel Nicholas Hodder, at the young age of 24. Joel left this world far too soon, but he lived every moment with passion, purpose, and a boundless sense of adventure that inspired all who knew him.

Joel was born on March 10, 2001, in Halifax at the Grace Maternity Hospital to proud parents Colleen Graham and Sandy Hodder. From his earliest days, Joel brought joy and light into the lives of his family. His childhood was marked by laughter, curiosity, and an early love for the outdoors that only grew stronger with time.

For the past five years, Joel pursued his career as a marine service technician apprentice at Shining Waters Marina in St. Margaret’s Bay. He was dedicated to his craft, finding joy in the challenge of the work and the camaraderie of the marina community.

He spoke often—and with pride—about his colleagues and the fascinating people from around the world who visited the marina. His enthusiasm and hard work were recently recognized in an article by the Nova Scotia Boatbuilders Association Newsletter, a testament to the reputation he was building within the industry he loved.

Joel had an infectious zest for life. His smile, always genuine and full-faced, lit up any room and left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was constantly in motion, whether skateboarding through town, strapping on skis in winter, or loading his backpack for another hike through Cape Breton or Nova Scotia’s wilderness.

He was as comfortable sleeping under the stars as he was dancing at a concert, fully embracing the spontaneity and wonder of the world around him. His love for music was as expansive as his adventures.

He sought out live shows and was deeply moved by the energy of performance and community. A trip to Maine last year with friends to attend a concert remains one of his most treasured memories.

His wanderlust took him far and wide—Cuba, Mexico, Las Vegas, Banff, Lake Louise, Newfoundland—always seeking new perspectives and forging unforgettable experiences.

Joel’s adventurous spirit was grounded in a deep love for his family. He shared a close bond with his parents, Colleen and Sandy, and his younger brother, Graham.

He was also deeply connected to his extended family, including Colleen’s partner Gerard and his children Mitchil, Chelsea, and Travis, as well as Sandy’s partner Lisa and her daughter Bria. His presence brought warmth, laughter, and unity to every family gathering.

He is lovingly remembered by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends who were touched by his magnetic personality, generous heart, and the authentic way he lived his life. Joel was a beacon of positivity—thoughtful, adventurous, and endlessly curious. His absence will be felt deeply, but the memories he created will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew him.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 10, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Atlantic Funeral Home, Oakridge Chapel (1110 Old Sackville Rd., Middle Sackville). A funeral service will follow on Friday, July 11, at 2:00 p.m., also at Atlantic Funeral Home.

Though Joel’s time with us was brief, his impact was immeasurable. May we carry forward his spirit by living as he did—with courage, kindness, and a sense of wonder. Rest in peace, Joel. You will always be loved, missed, and remembered.
