Authorities in Monroe County are investigating a tragic two-vehicle collision that claimed the life of 27-year-old Cloe Klatt of Monroe on Tuesday afternoon near the city’s busy shopping district.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of North Monroe Street and Mall Road. Klatt, who was driving a sedan northbound, attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Mall Road when her vehicle was struck by a southbound SUV driven by a 51-year-old Monroe woman.
Emergency responders pronounced Klatt dead at the scene after efforts to save her were unsuccessful. Investigators confirmed that she was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, while the other driver was properly restrained. Authorities noted this difference may have influenced the severity of the outcome.
The SUV driver was transported to a local hospital and is listed in stable condition. Officials emphasized that her seat belt likely prevented more serious injuries.
Deputies ruled out alcohol as a factor but continue to investigate speed, road conditions, and visibility. The sheriff’s office also reminded the public about the lifesaving importance of seat belt use.
