HAYS, Kan. – The Hays Police Department has confirmed the death of Sgt. Scott Heimann, a dedicated officer who was tragically killed while on duty over the weekend. Sgt. Heimann, who had served with the department since 2016, is being remembered as a respected colleague, loyal friend, and steadfast protector of his community.
The tragic events began late Saturday, September 27, when Hays police responded to a violent domestic disturbance. A woman reported that her partner, later identified as 34-year-old Zane Wickham of Hays, had rammed her vehicle with his truck as she attempted to escape. She managed to reach safety and call for help, prompting a swift law enforcement response.
By early Sunday morning, September 28, officers surrounded Wickham’s residence on Downing Street. At approximately 1:55 a.m., a single gunshot was fired from inside the home, striking Sgt. Heimann as he stood outside. Fellow officers immediately administered aid, and Heimann was airlifted to a regional hospital. Despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after 4 a.m.
Negotiators attempted to peacefully end the standoff, deploying gas canisters, drones, and tactical tools. At around 6:15 a.m., officers entered the residence and found Wickham dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators confirmed no officers discharged their weapons during the confrontation. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is leading the inquiry into the incident.
Community Response
Sgt. Heimann’s death has devastated Hays and resonated across Kansas. Mayor Sandy Jacobs, speaking on behalf of the City Commission, said: “His service and sacrifice in protecting our community will never be forgotten. We stand with our police department and community as we grieve this tragic loss.”
Police Chief Don Scheibler reflected on Heimann’s dedication: “Today we are tragically reminded that police officers put the lives of others above their own. Sgt. Heimann gave his life in service, showing dedication to the safety and well-being of others. His professionalism and positive presence will be deeply missed.”
A Legacy of Service
Sgt. Heimann is the third officer from Hays to be killed in the line of duty, and the first since 1875. His death marks the 295th line-of-duty fatality in Kansas since 1966. It also comes during a somber time for law enforcement in the state, as Kansas has lost an officer in each of the last four months.
For nearly a decade, Sgt. Heimann embodied the values of courage, honor, and public service. His colleagues describe him as both a reliable officer and a source of positivity within the department.
The City of Hays and its police department have asked residents to keep Sgt. Heimann’s family and loved ones in their thoughts and prayers as they grieve. His sacrifice stands as a lasting testament to his commitment to the community he served.
Rest in peace, Sgt. Scott Heimann. Your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
