Shortly after the discovery, CMPD’s Homicide Unit identified a suspect 33-year-old Darris Dee Marshall. Within hours, officers were called to a separate shooting incident where Marshall was located with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment before being interviewed by detectives.

Based on the evidence and interviews, Marshall was formally charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. Following his release from medical care, he was booked into the Mecklenburg County Jail, where he remains held without bond.

Marshall is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Monday, September 29. Investigators have not released a possible motive or confirmed whether Jackson and Marshall knew each other.

CMPD emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and encouraged anyone with additional information to come forward.
