A fatal accident on the N1 Northbound before Winnie Mandela Drive has claimed the lives of two people, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) confirmed on Thursday.
The collision involved a truck and two other vehicles, resulting in the truck overturning and spilling its load of cooking oil across the roadway. The hazardous spill has forced the closure of two lanes, causing significant traffic delays in the area.
Emergency Management Services (EMS) and law enforcement remain on the scene to clear the wreckage and manage traffic flow. Paramedics confirmed that two individuals were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released, pending notification of their families.
JMPD spokespersons have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when traveling in the vicinity and to consider using alternative routes while cleanup and investigations continue.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
