Authorities are investigating after shots were fired Thursday night at the 2025 DeKalb County Free Fall Fair, sparking panic and leaving several people injured during a stampede as crowds fled the fairgrounds.
According to DeKalb County Police scanner traffic, the incident occurred shortly before 8:52 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Officers reported hearing multiple gunshots and later recovered a 9mm firearm at the scene.
Two suspects are currently in custody, police confirmed. The arrests were made near the Auburn Brewery, just outside the fairgrounds.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as fairgoers scrambled for safety after shots rang out. Emergency responders treated multiple people for injuries sustained in the rush to escape, though it remains unclear how many were hurt or whether anyone was struck by gunfire.
Investigators are now interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage from the fairgrounds. Police have not released the identities of the suspects or the motive behind the shooting.
The DeKalb County Free Fall Fair is one of northeast Indiana’s largest annual community events, drawing thousands of visitors each year.
