A quiet Midvale neighborhood has been left shaken and heartbroken after police discovered the bodies of a married couple inside their home Tuesday morning in what investigators are calling a suspected murder-suicide.
According to Sgt. Aymee Race with the Unified Police Department (UPD), officers were dispatched around 11:13 a.m. to conduct a welfare check at a residence near 7500 South Jefferson Street. When officers entered the home, they found 65-year-old Eilleen R. Lyon and her husband, 63-year-old Terry W. Lyon, both deceased.
Detectives believe that Terry Lyon fatally shot his wife before turning the gun on himself. Authorities noted that the household had no prior history of domestic violence, and the case is being investigated by the UPD Violent Crimes Unit.
Neighbors and friends described the couple as well-known and deeply loved members of the community, making the news of their deaths even more difficult to bear. Eilleen, who lived at 7533 Jefferson Street, was remembered as a devoted sister, cherished friend, loving aunty, and kind neighbor who touched the lives of those around her.
“It’s hard to understand. They were such a part of the fabric of this community,” one neighbor said. “Eilleen was always smiling and always willing to help others. It’s just devastating.”
Police investigators remained at the scene throughout Tuesday afternoon, gathering evidence and working to notify extended family members. Sgt. Race stressed that the incident appears to be isolated, and that there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
“This remains an active investigation,” Sgt. Race said. “Additional details will be released when appropriate.”
The tragedy has left the Midvale community mourning and reflecting on the fragility of life. Local leaders encouraged residents to look out for one another during this difficult time, while grief counselors are expected to be made available in the coming days.
