The community of Danville, Illinois, is mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Gary Gritton, a beloved former teacher, coach, and athletic director at Danville High School.
His unexpected passing has left students, colleagues, friends, and family in deep grief, as they reflect on the tremendous impact he made throughout his life. Born and raised in Danville, Illinois, Gary graduated from Oakwood High School before dedicating his life to education, athletics, and community service.
He lived in Danville his entire life, proudly serving the same community that shaped him, and becoming a pillar of both the high school and the broader area. Gary devoted 24 years of service to Danville High School (DHS), where he wore many hats with excellence and heart.
As a teacher, he was known for making his classroom a place of joy, encouragement, and inspiration. Students often recall his sense of humor, patience, and passion for teaching, which made learning not only meaningful but fun.
One former student shared: “Truly one of the best teachers I ever had at DHS. Such a kind and inspirational teacher who made a difference. This is such a sad loss for his family, the community, and all his current and past students. Mr. Gritton was truly one of a kind.”
Beyond the classroom, Gary’s influence extended to the playing field. As a coach, he mentored athletes with fairness, dedication, and care, instilling values that went far beyond sports. Later, as Athletic Director, he provided leadership and vision, guiding the Viking athletic program with integrity.
