With heavy hearts, the Bemidji and Minneapolis communities mourn the passing of Simone Senogles, a dedicated leader, mother, sister, auntie, and friend who devoted her life to justice, community care, and the protection of Indigenous rights.
Simone, who lived in Bemidji and was originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, passed away leaving behind a powerful legacy that continues to inspire all who knew and worked with her.
Simone was a key member of the leadership team at the Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN), where she worked with a focus on Indigenous feminism, food sovereignty, and climate justice.
Her role as operations director was not just administrative; she was the heartbeat of the work, ensuring that the organization remained grounded in love, cultural strength, and collective purpose.
Her vision and commitment were central to advancing Indigenous leadership in movements to protect the earth, safeguard communities, and create pathways for future generations to thrive.
Beyond her professional leadership, Simone’s heart was rooted in her family and her community. She was remembered as a loving mother, sister, auntie, and friend whose warmth, generosity, and wisdom left a lasting impact.
Those who knew her describe her as a force of nature—someone who carried her responsibilities with grace and courage, while lifting others up with encouragement, kindness, and unwavering belief in their strength.
Simone was also the backbone of MMIW218, a group she created and nurtured with vision and devotion. She recognized and fearlessly reminded others that violence against the land and violence against Indigenous bodies are deeply connected, and she dedicated herself to fighting against both.
Her work was anchored in love for her people and an unshakable commitment to justice. She stood boldly as a protector, a teacher, and a leader, constantly reminding her community of their strength and resilience.
Her loss leaves an unfillable void, but her fire and vision remain as guiding lights. Friends and colleagues have spoken of her as an anchor—a woman who not only inspired but also empowered others to carry forward the work she so passionately believed in.
She was deeply generous with her time and talents, always ensuring that others felt seen, valued, and supported. Tributes pouring in reflect the profound reach of Simone’s life and legacy.
One friend wrote: “She was such a force for justice and community in Bemidji and beyond. She led with such depth and devotion and was a constant source of inspiration. May we all carry her legacy forward with love and a fierce commitment to make this world a better, safer, more connected place for everyone.”
As her family prepares to honor her journey, they ask for continued prayers, love, and support. Funeral service details will be shared soon. Simone’s passing is a profound loss, but her spirit endures in the movements she helped build, the community she strengthened, and the family and friends she so deeply cherished.
