Two people were killed and three others injured after a shooting erupted early Sunday morning near Kansas City’s downtown entertainment hub, the Power & Light District.

The incident happened around 3:30 a.m. on August 24 near E. 13th Street and Grand Boulevard, just two blocks from the T-Mobile Center.

SUPPORT THE FAMILY, GOD BLESS YOU

Kansas City police said an argument broke out in a parking lot before multiple shots were fired. When officers and fire crews arrived, they found five victims.

One man was pronounced dead at the scene. Another, who had been in critical condition, died later at the hospital around 6:40 a.m. Police have not released their names or ages.

Three others were hospitalized: a juvenile boy who remains in critical condition, a man with serious injuries, and a woman who suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Kansas City Police Sergeant Phil DiMartino condemned the violence, saying:

“I don’t know much, if anything, that is worth pulling a firearm out and shooting someone. Whether it is an argument, a disagreement, whatever it might be, nothing is worth someone losing their life over.”

Mayor Quinton Lucas also addressed the shooting, referencing his proposed surface lot ordinance, which would add new regulations to parking lots in high-traffic nightlife areas such as Power & Light, Westport, 18th and Vine, and the Country Club Plaza—areas that have seen frequent violent incidents.

The investigation remains ongoing as detectives review surveillance footage and interview witnesses. Police urge anyone with information to contact the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
