In Loving Memory of Daniel “Dan” Everett Smith
Daniel “Dan” Everett Smith, age 56, of Canton, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at Graham Hospital in Canton.
Dan was born in Peoria, Illinois, to Edward “Ed” and Margaret “Peggy” (Thompson) Smith, who lovingly raised him and preceded him in death.
On June 12, 2011, Dan married the love of his life, Margaret “Maggie” (Hamilton) Smith. Their marriage was filled with love, laughter, and companionship until Maggie’s passing on February 9, 2023.
Dan is survived by two stepchildren, Jeannie (Dauquan Terry) Hamilton and Naomi (Jason) Carson; his siblings, Regina Burgett, Coral (David) Nichols, and Jim Bush; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who will forever carry his memory in their hearts. He also leaves behind his three beloved cats—Princess, Squeaks, and Furby—who brought him endless joy and comfort.
Dan graduated from Farmington High School with the Class of 1988, where he proudly served as the basketball manager, making lifelong friendships and memories. His strong work ethic began early, with his first job at Kersh’s Café, followed by more than 40 years of mowing yards in the Canton area. He also delivered newspapers for 30 years for the Canton Daily Ledger, becoming a familiar and friendly face to many in the community. In his later years, he found joy in helping his niece Amanda and her husband Taurean with their business, H & A Party Rentals LLC, where his enthusiasm and support meant so much.
A man of faith, Dan was a devoted member of Bethesda Pentecostal Church in Pekin. He was also known for his love of animals, especially his cats, and for being a loyal Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, kayaking, and taking long walks, always finding peace and happiness in the outdoors.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service to celebrate Dan’s life will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, August 25, 2025, at Oaks-Hines Funeral Home in Canton, with visitation preceding the service from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
