Sydney Harbour Bridge Tragedy: Husband and Wife Die in Suspected Suicide on Saturday Morning

Two people have died after plunging from the Western Distributor overpass onto Harbour Street in Sydney’s CBD on Saturday morning.

Police confirmed the victims, a man and a woman believed to be in their 40s, were pronounced dead at the scene before emergency crews arrived around 9:45 a.m.

Following investigations, authorities determined there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the deaths. A report will be prepared for the coroner.

The incident caused major traffic disruptions, with southbound lanes of the Sydney Harbour Bridge closed and vehicles diverted to the Anzac Bridge. Roads were reopened by 1 p.m., though heavy traffic persisted around Millers Point. The Transport Management Centre urged motorists to allow additional travel time until conditions eased.

A crime scene was established by the Sydney City Police Area Command as officers examined the circumstances of the tragedy. Police have appealed for witnesses, asking anyone with information or dashcam/mobile footage from the area to contact Day Street Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
