A family vacation turned tragic Monday when 54-year-old Edina man died after failing to resurface following a jump into the river at High Falls.
Greg Corniea Edina MN Died in Tettegouche State Park Swimming Accident
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies were dispatched to the park just after 11:30 a.m. following a 911 call. Multiple agencies responded, including field agents from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), who deployed an underwater robot to assist in the search. The victim’s body was recovered at approximately 1:45 p.m.
Late Tuesday, authorities identified the man as Gregory Corniea. Investigators say Corniea was vacationing with his family when he leapt from the rocks into the river, a popular activity at the falls. It is believed he struck his head on rocks at the base, preventing him from resurfacing.
Family members told KARE 11 that the incident was a tragic accident during what had been a joyful trip. They noted that Corniea—along with many others—had jumped from the falls in the past without incident.
The High Falls of the Baptism River, at 63 feet high, is the tallest waterfall located entirely within Minnesota, according to the DNR. While breathtaking, the area’s strong currents, hidden rocks, and variable depths can pose serious dangers to swimmers and jumpers.
Authorities are reminding visitors to exercise extreme caution and to be aware of the risks when engaging in activities around waterfalls and fast-moving rivers.
