One person has died, and six others were rescued from the ocean Monday evening in Seaside Heights, officials said.
The Seaside Heights Fire Department reported that the emergency call came in just before 7 p.m. from Webster Avenue Beach, where multiple swimmers were in distress.
Rescue crews pulled all seven individuals from the water, but one swimmer later died at the hospital. The other six are recovering.
Authorities noted that over the weekend, 12 water rescues occurred in rip currents—all on unguarded beaches.
