The Inverness community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 16-year-old Jaedrien Story, a beloved Citrus High School student who tragically lost his life following a fiery car crash in Sumter County earlier this week. The accident has left the entire community reeling and has sparked an outpouring of grief and support across Citrus County.
Dylan Austin Richards arrested in deadly Inverness, FL crash
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the deadly crash occurred Monday afternoon as five teenage boys from Inverness were traveling southbound on Interstate 75 in a Dodge Charger. The vehicle was reportedly driven at a high rate of speed by 17-year-old Dylan Austin Richards, who attempted to overtake slower traffic. In a split-second decision to avoid a collision, Richards swerved onto the shoulder of the road, lost control, and slammed into a tree. The impact caused the vehicle to erupt into flames.
All five teens sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals. Jaedrien, just 16 years old, succumbed to his injuries despite emergency medical efforts. The remaining passengers—ages 13, 15, and 17—sustained varying degrees of injury.
The crash took a further disturbing turn when, according to troopers, Richards exited the burning vehicle, removed the license plate, and fled the scene on foot. Law enforcement officials, including FHP troopers and Sumter County deputies, launched an extensive search and ultimately located Richards hiding in a chicken coop on NW 111th Lane. He was taken into custody without further incident.
Richards is now facing multiple felony charges, including vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a crash involving death. The Florida Highway Patrol has stated the investigation is ongoing and is encouraging anyone with additional information to come forward.
