It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Dugald McMillan, a respected endodontist from Chattanooga, Tennessee, and a beloved figure in both his community and the world of dentistry. Dr. McMillan, who was a second-generation dentist, passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind a legacy of excellence in his field, a commitment to his patients, and a family that adored him.

Dr. McMillan was born and raised in the small town of Woodland, Alabama, where his passion for dentistry began at a young age. A proud graduate of the University of Montevallo, he earned his Bachelor of Science in 2005 before continuing his studies at the prestigious University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry (UAB). After completing his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree in 2009, he set out to serve his community with the same care and dedication his father, also a dentist, had shown for years.

Initially, Dr. McMillan practiced general dentistry in New Hope, Alabama, a community in need of quality dental care. But as he grew in his career, he developed a particular interest in endodontics—the branch of dentistry that specializes in the treatment of the inside of the tooth, particularly root canals. His desire for mastery in the field led him to return to UAB, where he completed his advanced training in endodontics and earned his Certificate in Endodontics in 2021. During his residency, he distinguished himself by serving as chief resident in his second year, a role that highlighted his leadership abilities and commitment to his craft.

His philosophy of patient treatment was rooted in conservatism—he always sought the least invasive option first and worked closely with each patient to discuss their options in detail, ensuring they felt fully informed and comfortable with the treatment plan. His patients appreciated not only his technical expertise but also his ability to listen, his transparency, and his genuine concern for their well-being.

To ensure that his patients received the best possible care, Dr. McMillan outfitted his practice, Chattanooga Endodontics, with state-of-the-art technology. From the precision of Zeiss microscopes that allowed for unparalleled accuracy in procedures to the comfort of massaging dental chairs designed to soothe nervous patients, Dr. McMillan left no stone unturned in creating a comfortable and effective environment.
