During Miller’s bond hearing Monday, Johnson’s mother, Claudia Johnson, delivered an emotional statement describing her son’s final moments. She told the court that Malcolm had been downtown getting food when the crash occurred and that, in a selfless act, he pushed his girlfriend out of the way before being struck.

Claudia Johnson said her son loved Batman and described him as a hero for his actions in the final seconds of his life.

“He did that at the end,” she said. “He went ahead and pushed his girlfriend out of the way. I wish somebody was Batman for him.”

Miller was denied bond and remains held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center as the investigation continues. Authorities have not released additional details but confirmed the case remains active and ongoing.

The tragic death of Malcolm D. Johnson has deeply impacted the Columbia community. Family and friends remember him not only for the life he lived but also for the courage and love he showed in his final moments—a hero to those who knew him and to those whose lives he touched.
