Pedestrian Dies in Urbana Hit-and-Run Accident; Authorities Searching for Driver

The Champaign County Coroner has identified the pedestrian killed in a hit-and-run crash early Saturday morning in Urbana as 22-year-old Perry Lee. Lee was pronounced dead at 9:44 a.m. at Carle Hospital.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Green Street and Mathews Avenue. According to preliminary investigations, a red Buick was traveling the wrong way on southbound Mathews Avenue at a high rate of speed when it collided with a University of Illinois Police officer’s squad car. The impact caused the vehicle to spin onto the sidewalk, where it struck a group of five pedestrians preparing to cross. Lee was among those hit and sustained life-threatening injuries.

Both the U of I police officer and Lee were transported to Carle Hospital. The officer was treated for minor injuries and is in stable condition. The driver of the red Buick fled the scene on foot and has not yet been located.
