Montclair, NJ Train Collision Injures 11; Montclair-Boonton Line Service Suspended

At least 11 people were reported injured after two New Jersey Transit trains collided near the Bay Street station in Montclair on the evening of December 19, prompting a suspension of Montclair-Boonton Line service.

According to a NJ Transit spokesperson, the incident occurred at approximately 6:47 p.m., when “two trains on the Montclair-Boonton Line reported making contact in Montclair west of Bay Street.” Emergency responders immediately rushed to the scene, treating and transporting those injured.

Authorities have confirmed that all injuries reported are non-life threatening. Emergency personnel declared the situation a mass casualty incident due to the number of individuals affected. The exact extent of injuries is still being assessed, and officials have not reported any fatalities at this time.

Initial updates indicate that two patients were assigned yellow tags, indicating moderate injuries, and nine were assigned green tags for minor injuries. Of those nine, two required transportation to nearby hospitals.

The Montclair-Boonton Line remains suspended while crews investigate the collision and ensure the safety of the tracks and surrounding infrastructure. NJ Transit officials are urging commuters to check for updates on service disruptions and alternative travel options.

Emergency responders and NJ Transit personnel are actively managing the scene, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
