Woman Kills Husband, Shoots Son in Apparent Murder-Suicide in Dyer County

Authorities are investigating a tragic shooting in Dyer County that left one man dead, another critically injured, and the suspected shooter deceased following a crash in what officials describe as an apparent murder-suicide.

According to the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a home in the Lennox area early Tuesday morning, where they found a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim, also suffering from gunshot wounds, was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Sheriff Jeff Box identified the suspect as 60-year-old Sherry Lydon. Investigators say Lydon fatally shot her husband, William John Lydon Jr., while he was sleeping, then shot her 24-year-old son before leaving the residence. The son remains hospitalized in critical condition.

After fleeing the home, authorities say Lydon drove eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-155 near the Mid-South Dragway (Highway 181). Her vehicle collided head-on with an 18-wheeler in what investigators believe was an attempted suicide. Lydon was taken to a hospital, where she later died. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.

Investigators stated that Lydon had recently undergone surgery and was reportedly experiencing mental health issues, which they believe may have contributed to the incident.

“This is an incredibly tragic situation that has affected our community deeply,” Sheriff Jeff Box said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lydon family during this difficult time, and we ask for your continued patience as we navigate this investigation.”

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to gather details surrounding the devastating events.
