ATKINS — Sheriff Wilson has identified 64-year-old Randy Joe Ruddell of Atkins as the victim in a deadly shooting that occurred Wednesday afternoon south of Atkins, and confirmed that 36-year-old Kyle Brandon Ruddell has been taken into custody in connection with the incident after deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting at the residence.
According to the sheriff’s office, emergency responders arrived at the scene and located Randy Joe Ruddell with fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the residence. Investigators immediately began gathering information at the scene, securing the area, and interviewing witnesses as part of an intensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Following the initial response, law enforcement launched a short manhunt for a suspect believed to be connected to the homicide. Authorities later identified 36-year-old Kyle Brandon Ruddell as the suspect. He was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the Pope County Detention Center, where he remains held.
Kyle Brandon Ruddell has been formally charged with First Degree Murder and Attempted Murder. Officials confirmed that his plea and arraignment are scheduled for Friday, December 19, 2026.
