The healthcare and nursing communities are mourning the death of Sammie Stewart Mosier, a respected Senior Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive at HCA Healthcare, who passed away in a Nashville accident on Sunday, December 14. Her death has prompted an outpouring of tributes recognizing a career defined by advocacy, leadership, and compassion.
Mosier, who held advanced credentials including DHA, MA, BSN, and NE-BC, was widely regarded as a transformative leader in nursing. In a statement, the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL) expressed deep sorrow over what it called an “unexpected and devastating loss,” noting that Mosier was a longtime member who consistently shared her vision with unwavering dedication to nurse advocacy, colleague engagement, and leadership development at every stage of a nursing career.
During her tenure as Senior Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive for HCA Healthcare, Mosier played a pivotal role in shaping nursing practice across the national health system. She led advocacy initiatives designed to elevate nursing voices in health policy, established programs to recognize excellence at the unit level, and pioneered a residency program aimed at supporting and advancing early-career nurses. Her work helped strengthen both professional development pathways and the visibility of nursing leadership nationwide.
AONL said Mosier would be remembered for leadership rooted in both empathy and expertise, adding that her influence will continue through the leaders she mentored, the nurses she championed, and the systems she helped build.
TriStar Greenview Regional Hospital also honored Mosier’s legacy, describing her as “more than a leader” and “a guiding light for nursing excellence and compassionate care.” In its tribute, the hospital highlighted her dedication to patients, her passion for advancing nursing practice, and her ability to inspire colleagues through teamwork, empathy, and service.
“Sammie believed in the power of teamwork, empathy, and service, and she lived those values every single day,” the statement read, noting that while her loss is deeply felt, her legacy of care and leadership will endure.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Sammie Stewart Mosier was remembered as a beloved daughter, mother, wife, sister, friend, and coworker.
