OSAGE, Minn. — Authorities are investigating a drive-by shooting on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the family farm of Winona LaDuke, an Ojibwe author, environmentalist and economist on the White Earth Reservation.
According to a news release from the Becker County Sheriff’s Office, dispatch received a report of gunshots at approximately 6:09 p.m. at a residence near the intersection of State Highway 34 and County Highway 391/460th Avenue, about 1 mile west of Snellman in Shell Lake Township. No injuries were reported.
LaDuke was not at the home at the time, but said in a phone interview on Wednesday, Nov. 19, that three teenage boys were inside.
“I’m very angry and shaken that people do that kind of stuff … they could have killed somebody,” LaDuke said.
According to the dispatch call log, those inside the home heard 10-20 gunshots while sitting in the house and observed damage, including a shot-out kitchen window. LaDuke said a bedroom window was also hit. The vehicle involved reportedly left the area immediately after the shooting.
“I’m just very grateful our family is safe,” LaDuke said. “I ask people to watch out for each other.”
The Becker County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help identifying a suspect. Anyone with information, or who was in the area around 6 p.m. Tuesday and observed suspicious activity, is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 218-847-2661.
