A tractor-trailer was destroyed Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a train in a dramatic collision at a busy Clayton County railroad crossing.
The crash happened shortly before 4:30 p.m. at East Conley Road and Moreland Avenue, according to a statement from Norfolk Southern, which operates the train involved in the incident.
Driver Narrowly Escapes
Authorities said the driver of the tractor-trailer managed to leap out of the vehicle just moments before the train barreled into the trailer. The escape likely saved the driver’s life, as the train struck the truck with enough force to scatter debris across the crossing and bring traffic to a standstill.
Train Was Traveling North
Norfolk Southern confirmed the train was traveling northbound at the time of the collision. No injuries were reported among the train crew or bystanders.
Investigation Underway
Clayton County police and railroad officials are currently investigating what caused the trailer to be on the tracks when the train approached. It is unclear whether the truck became stuck, stalled, or was attempting to cross as the train neared.
