Deadly neighbor dispute leads to officer shooting in Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, New York (PIX11) — A gunman suspected of killing his neighbor was fatally shot after he opened fire on NYPD officers in a Brooklyn apartment building Monday morning, police said.

The suspect’s bullet grazed a 25-year-old cop on the left side of his face in the first-floor hallway of the building at 1046 Thomas S Boyland St. in Brownsville at around 7:45 a.m., according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

Officer Sharjeel Waris, a four-year veteran of the NYPD, was treated at Brookdale Hospital before being released. Waris’ injuries were consistent with birdshot pellets fired from a shotgun, officials said.

“He came within inches of losing his life, but because of his skill and composure, he’s in that hospital room right now upbeat,” PBA President Pat Hendry said.

The officer returned fire and struck the perpetrator, who then barricaded himself in the apartment, police said. The suspect was later found dead in the apartment after drone footage showed him lying motionless on the kitchen floor with a shotgun near him.

“We don’t believe there was a self-inflicted wound,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said at a press conference. “We believe the suspect was shot by the injured officer, who returned fire once he was shot in the face.”

Officers were at the scene investigating a homicide on Boyland Street after they found 41-year-old Leroy Wallace on the sidewalk with a gunshot to the chest. Wallace was likely shot by the suspect in the building vestibule during an apparent neighbor dispute before stumbling outside and collapsing on the sidewalk, police said. He died at the scene.

Two cops who were rushing to the scene were involved in a car crash near New Lots Avenue and Boyland Street. The officers and the driver were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, police said.

“What happened this morning is a reminder of how quickly danger finds the men and women who protect this city,” Tisch said. “They stood their ground, they did their jobs, and they kept people safe, and once again they reminded us all what it means to put on that uniform.”

The gunman has not yet been identified.
