The CMPD cruiser was seen damaged on the front-passenger side corner, and the other vehicle was up against the lane barrier. The Independence bus lanes are for official use only.

The closure caused inbound traffic to back up to Sharon Amity Road. Medic reports at least one person was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to arrest warrants, 36-year-old Thomas Lee Royster is charged with seriously injuring two CMPD officers in the crash. It is believed that Royster was driving while impaired, which led to the crash.

At the time of the crash, court records state Royster’s driver’s license was revoked after being sentenced for a Level 5 DWI. He has formally been charged with two counts of Felony Serious Injury by Vehicle and Driving While License Revoked after an Impaired Revoked Notice.

Royster was booked into the Mecklenburg County Detention Center around 4:30 a.m. on Thursday and is currently being held without bond awaiting a court hearing Thursday morning.
