LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – 17-year-old Rehmier Westmoreland has been charged with homicide in connection with the shooting death of 18-year-old Daviahn Latham in Lansing.
The shooting happened on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at approximately 2:30 p.m. at the Arbors at Georgetown apartment complex on Lansing’s south side. First responders located Latham at the scene suffering from a gunshot wound and attempted to provide emergency aid but he died shortly after.
Ingham County Prosecutor John Dewane said Sunday that he has made the decision to charge Westmoreland as an adult.
“Although most 17-year-olds are handled in juvenile court, prosecutors may charge them as adults depending on factors including age, delinquency history, behavior in the juvenile system, and the seriousness of the offense,” Dewane said in a press release. “In this case I have evaluated the relevant factors, including information from records that are restricted or sealed, and have decided to charge this individual as an adult.”
A preliminary exam is scheduled for Westmoreland for December 4, 2025 before Judge Kristen Simmons in the 54-A District Court.
