Christa Veldkamp Grand Rapids, MI Obituary & Cause of Death: Cherished Pediatric Speech Therapist Dies by Suicide – Visitation Details Announced

Christa Leigh Veldkamp, 33, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, November 14, 2025, following a brief and difficult struggle with mental health. Her passing leaves a deeply felt loss among family, friends, colleagues, and countless children whose lives she touched through her work.

Christa is survived by her parents, Rick and Heather Veldkamp; her siblings, Kelly and Marc Schra and Eric Veldkamp; and her cherished nephews, Rowan, Ezra, and Cole Schra. She is also lovingly remembered by many extended family members, including the Mennega, Veldkamp, and Gun Lake families, as well as a wide circle of dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Joan Mennega; grandparents, Harry and Vivian Veldkamp; and her cousin, Amy DeKock.

Known for her adventurous spirit and infectious joy, Christa filled the lives of others with light. She loved being outdoors and was always ready for her next activity—whether water skiing, snow skiing, hiking, golfing, mountain biking, or rock climbing. She also enjoyed reading, spending time with her nephews, and surrounding herself with family and friends. Christa had a natural gift for caring for others and approached every relationship with compassion and sincerity.

A dedicated Speech and Language Pathologist, Christa worked at The Center for Physical Rehabilitation, where she primarily served children. Her kindness, patience, and skill earned her deep appreciation from students, clients, and colleagues alike.

Her family shared their immense gratitude for the 33 years they were blessed to have with Christa, noting that she leaves behind a legacy of joy, warmth, and unforgettable memories. In honoring her life, they encourage anyone who is struggling with mental health to seek help early and often—lean on family, talk with friends, and reach out to counselors and professionals.

“While we do not understand the reason for Christa’s struggle, we are choosing to hold on to the hope we have in Jesus Christ and the assurance that we will see her again in heaven,” her family said.


Christa Veldkamp Grad Rapids MI Visitation Plans
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, November 20, at Hillside Community Church, 1440 68th Street SE in Grand Rapids, with Rev. Ron Kool officiating. Family and friends may visit on Wednesday from 5–8 p.m. at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraaf Funeral Home, 4646 Kalamazoo Ave. SE in Kentwood.
