Benjamin Coyne, a graduate of St. Kevin’s College, has been identified as the motorcyclist who tragically died following a multi-vehicle crash on the M4 motorway in western Sydney in the early hours of the morning.
St Kevin’s College Graduate Died in Melbourne Car Accident
The incident occurred shortly before 2 a.m. near Church Street in Parramatta, when the motorcycle—believed to be a small scooter—was traveling eastbound on the motorway. According to early reports from NSW Police, the motorcycle collided with a white Kia sedan that had merged from lane two into lane one. The collision threw the rider onto the roadway, where he was tragically struck by several other vehicles, including a Toyota Echo, a ute, and a marked NSW Police car.
Emergency services arrived swiftly, with police and paramedics performing CPR at the scene before transporting Ben to the hospital. Despite their efforts, he could not be revived. He was in his 20s.
Ben Coyne’s sudden death has sent shockwaves through both his local community and the extended network of alumni from St. Kevin’s College, where he was remembered by classmates and teachers as a kind-hearted and driven young man with a bright future ahead.
A critical incident investigation is now underway, overseen by the NSW Police Force’s Professional Standards Command, due to the involvement of a police vehicle in the fatal incident.
According to NSW Police Commissioner Brett McFadden, initial investigations suggest the rider was traveling at a relatively low speed—well below the 90 km/h limit at that section of the motorway. The marked police car involved in the incident was not engaged in a pursuit and did not have lights or sirens activated at the time. “There had been no interaction with the motorcyclist,” police confirmed in a statement.
“This is a tragic set of circumstances for all involved,” said McFadden. “It’s incredibly distressing for the family, the officers, and the other drivers. Everyone is shaken.”
Three drivers, including a senior constable from NSW Police, were also taken to hospital for **mandatory testing** and are expected to be interviewed as the investigation progresses.
Traffic in the area was heavily impacted for hours following the crash. While two eastbound lanes of the M4 have since reopened, delays are still being experienced on nearby roads, including the Great Western Highway, M7, and M2.
Authorities are urging any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from the area at the time of the incident to come forward by contacting Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
As the investigation continues, tributes have begun to flow for Ben Coyne, a young man remembered not just for his education and career aspirations but for his humility, warmth, and the positive impact he had on those around him.
