Critical Incident Investigation Launched After Teen Motorcyclist Dies During Police Pursuit in Sydney
A critical incident investigation is underway after a 19-year-old motorcyclist died during a police pursuit in Sydney’s inner south late Monday night.
NSW Police said the incident began just before midnight when officers attempted to stop a motorcycle travelling northbound on Southern Cross Drive in Zetland. The rider allegedly failed to stop, prompting officers to initiate a pursuit.
Moments later, the motorcycle collided with the rear of a van traveling ahead of it. Police immediately provided first aid until paramedics arrived, but the rider — identified as George Manos, 19 — was pronounced dead at the scene.
A crime scene has been established, and detectives from the Critical Incident Investigation Team will now examine the circumstances surrounding the pursuit, the crash, and the actions of officers involved. As per standard procedure, the investigation will be subject to independent review.
Authorities have not reported any injuries to the occupants of the van.
Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have dashcam footage to come forward as inquiries continue.
