A Regis High School student was found dead Thursday on the Upper East Side campus, prompting a brief lockdown as police responded to the scene.
According to the New York City Police Department, officers were called to the prestigious all-boys Jesuit school on East 84th Street shortly after the student was discovered. Law enforcement officials said the death is being investigated as an apparent suicide and is not considered suspicious
The school was placed on lockdown out of an abundance of caution while emergency personnel secured the area. The lockdown was lifted later in the afternoon once authorities determined there was no ongoing threat to students or staff.
Regis High School administrators have not released the student’s name, citing privacy for the family. In a statement, the school expressed deep sorrow over the loss and said counseling services are being made available to students and faculty.
“Our community is heartbroken by this tragedy,” the statement read. “We are praying for the student’s family and for all those affected by this devastating loss.”
Police said no criminal activity is suspected, and the investigation remains ongoing.
