Authorities have updated their investigation into the fatal shooting in the Westgate area of Lakewood, confirming that the incident has been ruled a suicide, according to law enforcement.
Officers from the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office and Lakewood Police Department were called to the scene Wednesday night after reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, emergency responders located a woman with a fatal gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following an initial investigation, officials determined that there was no threat to the public and that the death was self-inflicted. The woman’s identity has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
Authorities have not provided additional details out of respect for the family’s privacy. No suspects are being sought, and the case is not being treated as a criminal homicide.
