The Calcasieu Parish community is mourning the tragic loss of Jerry Deslatte, 47, of Port Arthur, Texas, and an unidentified passenger, who were killed Sunday evening in a single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 109 near Line Road.
According to the Louisiana State Police, the crash occurred shortly after 6:30 p.m. Deslatte was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado southbound when the vehicle failed to navigate a left-hand curve, entered a ditch, and overturned. Tragically, both Deslatte and the passenger were unrestrained in the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries, being pronounced deceased at the scene.
Investigators continue to work to identify the passenger. Standard toxicology samples were collected as part of the ongoing investigation. Law enforcement emphasizes that seat belt use can significantly improve chances of survival and reduce the severity of injuries in vehicle crashes.
The loss of these two lives has left family, friends, and the community in deep grief. Their sudden deaths serve as a heartbreaking reminder of the fragility of life and the dangers posed by unrestrained travel.
The thoughts and prayers of the community are with Jerry Deslatte’s loved ones and with the family of the unidentified passenger during this profoundly difficult time. Anyone with information is asked to contact Louisiana State Police Troop D at (337) 491-2511.
