EAST ST. LOUIS, IL — A woman was fatally shot by Illinois State Police late Sunday night following a vehicle pursuit and confrontation that began with a reported stolen car, authorities confirmed.
Illinois State Police identified the deceased as Rachel E. Tarrence, 40, of Mayville, Illinois. According to ISP, troopers attempted to conduct a traffic stop near South State Street while investigating a vehicle that had been reported stolen.
Police stated that when troopers approached the vehicle, the driver allegedly reversed and struck a marked squad car. Authorities further allege that the vehicle then moved forward in the direction of a trooper, prompting one trooper to discharge their weapon. Tarrence was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.
No troopers were reported injured during the incident.
As is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings, the involved trooper has been placed on administrative leave. The incident is now under investigation by the Illinois State Police Division of Internal Investigation, with oversight from the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office. Officials said body-worn camera footage and squad car video will be reviewed as part of the investigation.
Illinois State Police emphasized that no additional information is being released at this time as the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have not indicated whether any charges were pending prior to the encounter.
