The Dyer County community is reeling after a tragic incident that has left lives shattered and hearts heavy. Early this morning, deputies from the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting in the Lennox area, discovering a scene that has left the community grappling with loss, shock, and grief.
Authorities confirmed that one man, identified as 60-year-old William John Lydon Jr., was found with at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. His son, 24-year-old [son’s name if available], was also shot and taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where he remains under close medical care.
The investigation revealed that the suspect, identified as 60-year-old Sherry Lydon, left the residence following the shooting. In an apparent attempt at suicide, she drove eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-155 near the Mid-South Dragway (Highway 181) and collided head-on with an 18-wheeler. She was transported to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Remarkably, the driver of the semi-truck was unharmed.
Sheriff Jeff Box described the incident as a profoundly heartbreaking event, revealing that mental health challenges may have played a role. “This is an incredibly tragic situation that has affected our community deeply. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lydon family during this difficult time, and we ask for your continued patience as we navigate this investigation,” said Sheriff Box.
Initial reports suggest that Sherry Lydon had recently undergone surgery and was reportedly experiencing mental health issues, factors that investigators believe contributed to this devastating sequence of events.
As the community mourns, friends, neighbors, and loved ones are left to process the unimaginable. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the profound impact that mental health struggles can have on individuals and their families.
The Dyer County Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation into the incident, working to provide clarity and understanding while supporting the victims’ family. In times like these, the community is called upon to come together—to offer support, compassion, and healing for those directly affected by this heartbreak.
Our thoughts remain with William John Lydon Jr., his son, and all those touched by this tragedy. May they find strength, and may the community unite in remembrance, care, and vigilance, honoring the lives impacted by this sorrowful event.
