Clark was a two-time PGA Tour winner and was ranked 47th in the world at the time of his death. Known for his powerful driving and approachable demeanor, he had earned widespread respect not only for his play but also for his character. He was in Mexico during a break in the professional golf schedule.

“Garrett was not only an exceptional golfer but an even better person,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement. “His passion for the game, his generosity toward fans, and his commitment to his ‘Birdies for Books’ literacy charity touched countless lives. The entire PGA Tour family is heartbroken.”

Tributes quickly filled social media as players and fans shared memories and condolences. World number one Scottie Scheffler wrote, “Absolutely gutted. Competed against him, laughed with him, learned from him. The course will feel quieter without him.” Fellow professional Mia Rodriguez posted a photo from a junior golf clinic, adding, “He made every kid feel like a champ. A terrible, terrible loss.”

Clark’s longtime caddie, Ben Foster, speaking to ESPN, described the golfer as “the steady hand in every storm,” adding, “I’ve lost my brother. We were already planning for Augusta.”

The tragedy has also renewed attention on water safety at popular tourist destinations. Officials in Los Cabos reiterated the importance of swimming only in designated areas and paying close attention to posted safety warnings.

Clark is survived by his wife, Elena, and their two young children. In a brief statement, the family thanked the public for its support and asked for privacy as they grieve. “Garrett lived his life with joy and purpose,” the statement read. “We are shattered but hold tight to the love he gave.”
